The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American freighter that sank on November 10, 1975 during a storm on Lake Superior. All 29 crew members lost their lives. The accident is probably the best-known disaster in the history of shipping on the Great Lakes. The disaster became known worldwide through the Canadian folk singer Gordon Lightfoot, who processed the events of the sinking in his ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”.
