The Fram is a ship completed in 1892 that Norwegian polar explorers used between 1893 and 1912. The Fram was built to be able to drift in pack ice without being damaged by the enormous pressure of the ice. At the same time, the ship was so well insulated that it can be described as the first zero-energy ship.

The initiative for its construction came from Fridtjof Nansen; in 1890 he commissioned Colin Archer, the renowned Norwegian ship designer from Larvik, to build the Fram. No wooden ship ever sailed—neither in the south nor in the north—at higher latitudes than the Fram.
