United States remains the holder of the Blue Riband as the fastest passenger ship on the transatlantic route. She was used as a liner of the shipping company “United States Lines” for scheduled service from New York to Europe.

The turbine ship was built from 1950 to 1952 in Newport News. Her steam turbines were designed for aircraft carriers, giving her the most powerful propulsion system of any merchant ship ever built. Her top speed was 71 km/h.

After a long lay-up and several sales, United States was actually due to be scrapped, but a group of enthusiasts acquired the ship in 2011 for 3 million US dollars using donated funds. A combination as a hotel, museum and cultural ship is planned.
