The El Cazador (The Hunter) was a Spanish warship that sailed from Veracruz in Mexico to New Orleans, then the capital of the Spanish colony of Louisiana, on January 11, 1784, carrying 19 tons of Spanish real silver coins.

The money was intended to stabilize the colony’s economic situation. However, the ship sank in the Gulf of Mexico for unknown reasons. The economic situation deteriorated so much that Spain was forced to sell the colony to France in 1800.
