The first ship to bear the name Bonhomme Richard was a frigate of the Continental Navy. She was built as a merchant ship of the French East India Company under the name “Duc de Duras” for voyages between France and the Orient.

On February 4, 1779, command of the converted ship was handed over by King Louis XVI to Captain John Paul Jones and made available to the USA on loan. At that time she was renamed Bonhomme Richard.

In the Battle of Flamborough Head against the British “Baltic Fleet” in 1779, the ship was eventually sunk.
